Happy birthday to Jonathan Frakes, who played First Office William T. Riker on Star Trek: The Next Generation for seven seasons, as well as on episodes of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, Star Trek: Voyager and Star Trek: Enterprise, and in four Star Trek movies. During his time on TNG, he became interested in directing, and he learned it the right way, by spending hundreds of hours in the edit room until he was ready. He went on to direct 8 episodes of TNG, 3 each of DS9 and Voyager, and two movies, Star Trek: First Contact and Star Trek: Insurrection. He once said that his strength as a director is that he's "a reformed actor," and he likes to keep the camera moving. His directing career has taken off, putting him in the chair for episodes of Leverage, The Glades, Castle, Burn Notice, Falling Skies, NCIS: Los Angeles, The Librarians, and most recently, The Orville as well as the brand new Trek series premiering on September 24th, Star Trek: Discovery. Happy birthday to the man with the vision, the beard, and the trombone!
